Bill C-384: On whether to Legalize Euthanasia And Assisted Suicide In Canada or not.

There is too much room for abuse if euthanasia and assisted suicide was to be enacted into law.
I am reminded of two stories, the first is of a young dancer in Holland who developed arthritis in her toes. To her in that time of distress and depression, "life was over" because dancing was her life. She was killed at her request by a doctor. A tragic loss of life, when this woman could have grown through the pain of her loss and enjoyed a happy productive life perhaps even lived to dance once again...

The other story is of a young junior hockey player in B.C. who took a shallow dive off a pier during training camp and became a quadriplegic. "Life was over" and he too felt like dying. He would be in a wheelchair and breathe through a tube for the rest of his life. Given time he was able to grow through the pain of his loss.

He became a B.C. hospital counsellor to people who go through tragic crippling accidents. He gives them hope that life is still worth living. He is happily married to a lovely woman who grew up with a paraplegic Dad. One of the great joys of this man's life is their beautiful adopted daughter. I have met this man and his life and words were an encouragement to me and I am able bodied.

In the words of Norm Kunc, a gifted man with cerebral palsy, "If you are for legal assisted suicide and euthanasia - you better be very, very nice to your children."

God bless and guide you, whether you believe in a loving person and power greater than yourself or not, the truth is the truth. Please protect Canadians at all stages of their life's journey.

Sincerely,

J.S.C.H

P.S. After sending the letter I see that this bill has been called 'Dying With Dignity': "C-384 (Dying With Dignity) allows euthanasia or assisted suicide for anyone who has chronic physical or mental pain, or a terminal illness, and appears to be in their right mind (or if they are not in their right mind, by their power of attorney's request). It does not specify how the euthanasia or assisted suicide should take place and the person requesting it does not have to be Canadian, meaning people could come to Canada from other nations specifically to die. It has no safeguards for preventing people from disabilities from being targeted by doctors or family members to die, and should it pass, the safeguard protecting people under 18 would be struck down as unconstitutional. Excellent letter, good for you. I have sent in my 'unlike' stance via snail mail as well. I have sent the link to your letter in P.E.N. to a friend of mine who is very active in this.
