Both series recorded shutout efforts by keepers Adam Galpin and John Hetherington but every honest goalie knows that shutouts are equally due to help from a good defense and a quick offence.

Stars vs Coyotes

Game 1 saw the Coyotes underestimate the Stars shortened bench and before they could get back in the game it was 6 – 3 in favour of a confident looking Stars team. Sean Armstrong, Mark Steunenberg and Bryan Lim all connected for two points on the victory with some nice top shelf action. The break between the first two games was a silent sobering moment for the Coyotes, and a short-lived party for the Stars.

Game 2 + 3 the Coyotes caught fire, winning nearly every battle and frustrating the Stars hope for two game glory by shutting them out. This was thanks to an inspiring two way effort from Dave Snowden, with nice opening and closing goals from Captain Mark Giesbrecht, and then there was the opener and closer in Game 3 by Marcus Schmauling.

Masking the pain well, Hetherington bounced back with some redemptive goal keeping; he is reported to have been nursing an injured shoulder. The doctor says it should take six weeks to heal up with physio. We’ll see if he’s able to play in next Tuesday night’s pivotal series for the lead position in the playoffs.

Game MVP’s for the Stars go to Mark Steunenberg, Sean Armstrong and Bryan Lim.

Game MVP’s for the “Yotes” go to Mark Giesbrecht, Marcus Schmauling and Scott Stanley leading out in the playoffs with his five point, two goals and three assists night.

In The Goalie’s Crease

Both Lim and Hetherington found players entering their crease before the ball, interfering with their ability to make saves. This type of play is an infraction for reasons of fairness of play and the safety of the goalie. For example, Lim was knocked to the ground when a player cut across in front of the net causing Lim to hit the back of his head. Goalies take enough shots and bruises from the ball so let’s give them some room out there and watch the digging in the glove and between the legs! And as for the psychological warfare, let's not go there...

The Goalie Crease Rule in most if not all types of hockey it's considered an infraction when a player enters the crease in any manner, screens inside the crease, makes no attempt to exit and is not being held there by an opponent. In most ball hockey and in men's ice hockey the play is blown dead when an opposing player enters the crease. After the first warning it’s a penalty.

A goal scored in these cases is disallowed. The only case where a goal would be counted is if a defending opponent purposefully holds a player in the crease.

Ducks vs Sharks

In Game 1 of the series, MVP Andrew Shobridge started the Duck’s off early with a low ‘slapper’ from the point only to be answered by the Shark’s Chris Buss. The game teetered back and forth with strong play by all and great goaltending from both Adam Galpin and Cody Funston. Finally at the 55 minute mark, fore checking fearlessly, Bryan Ward fed Terry U-Ming at the centre face off circle to rip one past the screened Cody Funston for the Duck’s narrow 6 – 5 win.

In Game 2 the Duck’s came out strong and never let up. The Shark’s game plan unraveled as Duck’s sensation Dan Galpin led the way with a hat trick. The third goal was in itself a highlight reel. The play started down low, right of the Shark’s net, Galpin dropping it for Ho, back to the rookie Peters at the point, back down low to Ho, and as Galpin circled around behind the net, Ho saucered a pass across the crease to a wide open Galpin, for the tap in. The Duck’s bench screamed “just like the Sedin’s”.

As impressive as this goal was, the credit for the win goes to the Duck’s Bryan Ward for his tenacious persistence on shutting down Shark’s star, league scoring leader and last year’s league MVP Kevin Lim. In short course, the Duck’s netminder Adam Galpin shut out the Shark’s with an impressive 6 – 0 victory to take the series in two.

Game MVP’s for the Sharks are David MacGregor and Travis Guenther for their spirited efforts.

Game MVP’s for the Ducks are Bryan Ward for his defensive efforts in the series,
Andrew Shobridge for his offensive contribution of 1 goal and 4 assists for a career high five points and Adam Galpin for his shut out performance in Game 2.

Next week look out for some Olympic efforts all around. Players are warned there may be random tests for banned substances.
