Stars vs Ducks

Contributing: Stephen Ho

Game 1

The Star’s Newcomer, Sean Armstrong and the Duck’s big brother, Dan Galpin donned the goalie attire to start the evening’s affairs. Both played exceptionally well, with traffic in their face, as the Duck’s out hustled the Stars in a hard fought game. Kevin Corstorphine, with his best performance of the season, shone as he fired in two beauties to lead the offensive attack for the Stars. The young guns for the Ducks, including speedster Bryan Ward and power forward Adam deJong, started and ended the scoring leading the Ducks to a closely contested 6 – 4 win.

Game 2

The game was exceptionally fast paced, with Steve Kim backstopping the Stars in Game 2. Sniper Mark Steunenberg registered his second and third goals of the evening to keep the Stars close in the early stages of Game 2. Dan Galpin continued his excellent net minding, with strong D-men Terry U-Ming and Andrew Shobridge minimizing rebounds and watching Adam Galpin’s stellar performance in the offensive zone. The younger Galpin, playing in his first non-goaltending role in many years, contributed on every scoring drive to end the series with five points in a convincing 5 – 3 Duck’s victory.

Stars MVP: Steve Kim with a goal and 2 assists and an excellent goaltending performance in Game 2.

Ducks MVP: Adam Galpin with his 3 goals and 3 assists and endless enthusiasm.

A first place finish...!

Sharks vs Coyotes

Game 1

The Coyotes Captain Dave Sattler was back in action after a week away to open the scoring early in the game. Then Lundstrom and Eisenhauer of the Sharks slipped a couple “lucky” one’s past Hetherington. With the score tied 2 – 2, there came a pounding at the door that was opened to let in Kevin Lim, but not before a self-sacrificing diving shot by Marcus Schmauling lifted the ball high over a sprawling Funston to put the Coyotes in the lead again.

The final score would be 6 – 4 Coyotes with a full team rally led by Sattler with 1 goal + 3 assists, Schmauling with 2 goals and Stanley with a hat-trick assisted twice by Giesbrecht. Eisenhauer, Lim and Buss were in on the goals for the Sharks.

Game 2

Unsurprisingly the Sharks took a 4 -1 lead, started off by Buss, and Bouwsema followed by Travis Guenther with two. And then the Coyotes fought back with Stanley, and Sattler
adding to Giesbrecht opener to make it 4 – 3. Bouwsema with a screen shot around the defenceman at close range put the Sharks within one for the win. Ken den Braber returned with a screen shot of his own to keep the Coyotes on the come back track.

And then Buss having beat the Coyotes defense cut across in front of the crease, the ball left his stick headed for the open net only to find it’s resting place in a diving trapper save by Hetherington. Both goalies fended off some major end to end scrambles until the game came to an anti-climactic end for both teams. The Coyotes goaltender made a chest save on his knees – seconds past – the play was dead, or so he thought; out of nowhere Theo Bouwsema saw what Hetherington was unaware of and poked the ball from between the pads and across the line. A case of better late than never you could say, if you were a Shark. It’s the kind of goal that can haunt a goalie let me tell you, the final score 6 – 4.

Game 3

Putting the heartbreaking loss behind them, the Coyotes came out with renewed determination. A few shots were exchanged from end to end until Andrew Neilson led out with a top shelf ripper worthy of an exclamation mark! Followed up a shift later by yet another goal from Stanley and Sattler and everyone knew where this game was headed. On his next shift out a Dave Sattler special secured the Coyotes first place spot and sent them home with a smile. Well all but Hetherington who was “not happy” with his play but “proud” of his teams strong fore-checking effort that led to the victory.

Sharks MVP’s: Theo Bouwsema with two goals and two assists in Game 2

Coyotes MVP’s:
Dave Sattler with 3 goals and 5 assists, Scott Stanley with 4 goals and three assists for the night.
