Ducks vs Sharks

Was it going to be Open Duck Season or an upsetting Shark Fin Soup? That was what was on this editors mind going into Tuesday night.

Find Stats...

Note: Apologies go out to Adam Dejong who's four goals from previous games were mistakenly awarded to Adam Galpin but just caught by the Statsman. This moves Dejong up to 31 Goals and 9 Assists for 41 points and into 5th in the Top 10 as seen in the screen shot below the article.

GAME 1
It was a fast paced and gentlemanly played affair with great defensive play and goal-tending by Adam Galpin and the Ducks, effectively putting a damper on Kevin Lim’s reign of goaltender terror and holding him scoreless. Galpin backstopped numerous point blank salvos.

GAME 2
The Sharks fought back, forechecking hard to force turnovers that led to Kevin Lim opening the scoring, followed by Chris Bus. Buss and Lim kept it close until speedster Bryan Ward and Sharpshooter Colin Peters scored four of the Ducks next five goals to seal the deal.

In comparison to the final mid-season game between these two, flashback to Cody Funston’s outstanding performance, in which total gym time elapsed after only one game - tonight’s games ended in 40 minutes. The Sharks were missing Captain Reid Lundstrum and hard hitting Gordie Gildmeuster which may have contributed to the Ducks dominating on the night. A definite playoff rematch in the making.

The Ducks sinking the Sharks in two straight, leave the Sharks first place standing open for a Coyote takeover.

MVP honours for the Ducks are shared between Collin Peters for four goals and one assist including to game ending goals and for Andrew Shoebridge’s fearless shot blocking and great defensive play.

The Sharks MVP goes to Chris Buss for contributing three goals and one assist to the effort.

Stars vs Coyotes

The Coyotes were missing Captain Dave Sattler to be outdone by the Stars only showing five players strong plus a goalie, missing two of their big guns in Steunenberg and newcomer Armstrong. The result was a more relaxed night of hockey than either team was accustomed to.

GAME 1
The Coyotes took an early 3 – 0 lead before the Stars got on the board, though their numbers were low they did not give up but it was no contest. Everyone on the Coyotes bench registered in the scoring to take the game 6 – 3.

GAME 2
The Stars fought back hard keeping the score within one up until a 3 – 3 deadlock was broken by Andrew Neilson. Neilson found the breathing room to lift one top shelf past a scrambling Mike Lim who was still looking for the ball after having made the first save. This series was also settled in roughly 40 minutes of play with a second 6 – 3 victory for the Coyotes who had some great passing plays seldom seen in small gym play.

MVP Honours for the Stars go to captain Bryan Lim who would not quit, and led his team with two goals and two assists.

As for the Coyotes, MVP honours could go to the whole team really. Dave Snowden, Marcus Schmauling and Andrew Neilson all came away with 2 goals and two assists and Scott Stanley had four goals on the night and came so close to getting several more.

A night of 2 Up 2 Down sets the stage for a thrilling first place showdown next week. The Coyotes win, and the Sharks loss ties the two teams in points but a better goals for and against average for the Coyotes and the Sharks registering two more losses, puts the Coyotes atop the league standings. With one game left in regular season play, first place fate is in the hands of both teams as they face each other.

It’s a chance for all teams to up their game before we enter the playoff round heading for the Silver Mug Final on March 2nd.

It's all in serious fun isn't it gents!
