Due to long first games in the quest for the coveted seven goal win, both series were decided by heroic shootout battles.

Coyotes vs Stars

North of Hwy 1 the Coyotes came out on top after a sudden death shootout with three shooters each stepping up to decide a 4 - 4 score in Game 2. Mike Lim played outstanding in net in both games with save after save only letting a couple soft ones get by him when he was off balance. Hetherington let in a few in that department with his experiment of switching to the opposite stick and glove hands until the end when he switched back and in alternate Captain Mike Giesbrecht words: "stoned their big guns in the shoot-out" redeeming himself.

Hats off to the Stars who though struggling to put another series win together have the talent in their line up to get the job done if, in Captain Brian Lim's words, "bounces would only go their way."

GAME MVP's

Mike Giesbrecht was on fire and in the right place at the right time with a natural hat trick and Andrew Neilson shares the Game MVP honours with a solid night and for scoring the ‘nice hands’ sudden death shootout winner for the Coyotes.

Mike Lim takes the honours again for the Stars with some stellar goal keeping especially during scrambles in front of the net.

Sharks vs Ducks

Contributing: Stephen Ho

And south of Hwy 1 Game 1 started on time but ended with a score of 7 - 6, an unprecedented 72 minutes later on an inevitable “soft” goal, a harmless screen shot from the Duck’s big 'D' Andrew Shobridge. Isn’t this always the way.

Editor’s Note: Perhaps it’s time for the league to look at the time factor in terms of deciding game outcomes.

The winning performance of the Duck’s Adam Galpin was overshadowed by the Shark’s Cody Funston unbelievable goaltending performance. Cody “O” stopped all but 7 of the 100 or so shots sent his way. If only Cody could skate, Team Canada’s Steve Yzerman could easily resolve his goalie dilemma. In recognition of his Olympic Gold performance, the player’s welcomed him with a standing ovation at last night’s Christmas break celebration at the Tap House. Funston's post game commentary was simply “I was so exhausted, my legs were so tired, the pads felt so heavy and I was so happy it was over because I could barely stand up any longer.”

With 10 minutes left Game 2 was a shootout win 3 - 2 in the Sharks favour with David Gordon and Kevin Lim coming through again forcing a second shootout. Don't let it go to your head Kevin!

Game 3 saw the Sharks take the series and the shootout 2 -1 over a disappointed Ducks crew. You could see it on Dan Galpin and Adam Dejong' s faces at The Tap House. Ah, but they'll be back next year. Oh yes, they will be back.

GAME MVP's

Once again Cody Funston for the Sharks rose to the occasion to save the day.

Adam Galpin and Andrew Shobridge shared the honours for the Ducks.

XMAS BREAK UPDATE [CORRECTION]

So here we are at the break with the Sharks edging out the Coyotes by one point having played two games more in the best of three series format. Top Ten Scoring is led by Kevin Lim, leading in assists is Stephen Ho followed close behind by Dave Sattler. The Coyotes double the Top Ten department team wise with four men in the ranks, not to mention having the keeper with the best goals against average.

All teams have proven they can win a game against any other team on any given night. It's who can put two together that goes home the happier lot. What we’ve seen so far is a good place to build and battle from.

Have a good holiday season gents and God bless you and yours! See you at the net again in 2010.

Find SURVEY: If you haven’t done the short online survey yet please do so within the next few days as it will expire this week. At the time of writing we have only heard from 15 of 40 players. It would be best to hear from a majority. Your voice counts!

TOURNAMENT TALK: There are other church groups and others hockey players from the community who would like to play in a tournament hosted by myself, and the NSAHL so it would be good to know we have the numbers for at least one team ourselves for a fun end of the season tournament. The idea here besides having fun is to help bring in more players and thus teams for 2010 Fall/Winter season.

Are you interested in playing on a team in a competitive, or co-ed fun series? Please reply to hetheringtonhockey()gmail (dot) com with at least “Tournament Yes” in the subject line. I need to know we have enough guys before I put forward the money and book the gym time… while it is still available to be booked!
