A smaller and slipperier than normal Capilano Gym saw shorter than normal games played by the Coyotes and the Ducks. After 45 minutes of play it was all over. The Duck’s Terry U-Ming had a breakout performance in Game 1, with 2 goals and 2 assists, that together with Adam Dejong’s hat trick led the Ducks to an easy 7-4 victory. Missing a few players, the rhythm of two full lines plus a keeper worked really well for them.
Both games for the Coyotes saw Dave Snowden with a gold medal effort, he was unstoppable on some plays being bumped along the boards and losing his footing but not control of the play as he got back to his feet and took the ball across the gym and to the net for four goals and an assist. Dave Sattler had four assists and one goal moving him past Scott Stanley, who was away that night, and into third place in the scoring overall. Not bad for a full time defenseman who’s always there to pick up rebounds in his end.
Game 2 saw the Coyotes take an early lead and then lose it only to bounce back making it 6 – 6. There were several in front of the net rebounds with the ball destined for mesh only to bounce off those mammoth arms of the lacrosse goalie chest protector of the Ducks keeper. Hetherington was robbed twice in one shift of such game winning glory. And with the defense caught out of position the Coyotes gave up a breakaway with a perfect pass from Adam Dejong sending Collin Peters in for the heroic top corner slam.
The Duck’s veteran Adam DeJong’s post game series comment on his 7 points, including two hat tricks, was humbly stated, “Those were my two best games ever”.
Not taking anything away from the Ducks victorious effort and their getting the shots on net - had “yotes” part-time keeper Ken den Braber been a little more practiced and accustomed to such a small gym, a number of softer shots would never have crossed the goal line. Hetherington will be back next week to take on the Stars and den Braber will continue his smart aggressive play on defense.
And for the record, Dan Galpin is already 13th in the scoring with only four games to his name so far this season, but we know he’s not counting; he just loves to play this great game of hockey.
The Duck’s game MVP’s are Adam DeJong and Terry U-Ming and the Coyotes honours go to the two Top Ten Scoring Dave’s, of Snowden & Sattler.
Sharks vs. StarsIt was another time and space down at good ol’ QM where Game 1 took an hour to decide, which spells good goal tending and defense to me. What does the final score of 7 - 2 in favour of the Sharks tell you? Mark Steunenberg was away.
Steven Kim had a fire lit under him for Game 2 where he took Steunenberg’s place with a personal best four-goal game including the first three in a row for the Stars. When they ran out of time it was 6 -5 in favour of the Stars, an unassisted goal by Brian Lim putting them on top and forcing a shoot out to decide the series winner.
Kevin Lim and Chris Buss led the night with 8 points and 7 points apiece both scoring when called upon in the Game 3 a.k.a. shootout winner where Steve Kim opened up the scoring for the Stars and Kevin Lim closed out the evening with the winning goal to put the Sharks back on top.
Next Tuesday decides where the teams will rest in the standings and where players will be in the scoring over the holiday break.
