Stars vs Coyotes

The Stars came out shinning and found the Coyotes goaltender Hetherington, dog-tired, sleeping on the play. The Stars first two shots of the game were early goals by marksman Steunenberg who helped lift his team to a lead they would not let go of. The Coyotes fought back hard but lost 7 – 6 in Game 1 to another of Steunenberg four goal games; three goals were unassisted efforts. Once again there was some great goal tending on the night by Mike Lim.

Game 2 was no cakewalk for the Coyotes with the Stars eyeing a series win in two. The Coyotes weren’t about to roll over and play dead; instead they shut the door with a close 7 – 5 score. Their opponents had lit up the gym floor but failed to capitalize on several good chances in front of the net by fanning on the pass. Coyotes Andrew Neilson had his best night of the season so far with an inspiring ripper of a goal and doubling his stats with a four-point night. Both Steve Kim and Steve Vogel of the Stars boasted five points each.

Jon Maciver said it was “adrenaline” that woke Hetherington up for the tie-breaking third game. He shut out the Stars by pouncing on a few close calls. Scott Stanley got the ball rolling for the Coyotes by sending a ripper high and home top right. Dave Sattler followed minutes later with a nice goal and almost scored again on a great effort to end the game moments later. Once again the game three hero at QM was #11 Marcus Schmalling, assisted on the play by Ken den Braber.

Game MVP’s are Marcus Schmalling with a seven-point night for the Coyotes and for the Stars Mike Lim, and Mark Steunenberg who boasted a six-goal night share the MVP honours again.

Ducks vs Sharks

Contributing: Stephen Ho

The presence of the Duck’s veteran sharpshooter Dan Galpin in his first game of the season combined with the absence of the Shark’s Chris Buss may have played a big factor in tonight’s outcome.

The Duck’s started quickly with a bullet shot from former NSA Ball Hockey Defenseman of the Year, Andrew Shobridge. The excellent play of the Duck’s defensemen continued as Terry U-Ming and Jon Harbut minimized the Sharks scoring opportunities of the first place team. Perhaps the defensive efforts were best reflected in the stats department by the fact that in Game 1 it was Duck’s goalie, Adam Galpin with two points, and the leagues scoring leader Kevin Lim with a goose egg. A rare event unlikely to repeat itself but the season is still young. Collin Peter’s was robbed, point blank, on numerous occasions and felt that the win may have been more prominent had the Shark’s Cody Funston not made so many spectacular saves.

Game 2 was a continuation of the first match. The speed and tenacity of the young Bryan Ward and the offensive talent’s of Dan Galpin, with 3 goals and 3 assists, proved to be too much for the Shark’s as the Duck’s won handily 7 – 2. A post-game comment by Shark’s captain, Reid Lundstrom acknowledged that the Duck’s won most of the battles and simply wanted it more.

Game Night MVP for the Ducks is shared by Stephen Ho and Dan Galpin, the Sharks MVP for the night is Cody Funston.

SCHEDULE: Next week the Coyotes meet the Ducks full roster for the first time, assuming Dan Galpin is in town, at the new Capilano location - Find.

And the Stars prepare to take on the humbled Sharks at QM.

You are not a youth anymore; it’s time you get that. Bring your player gear and let Ken play goal when you’re already exhausted before the game! You can’t play two nights of ball hockey in a row from week to week and give your best to this team.

Sorry guys, I almost totally let you down but we dug deep and pulled it off in a Game 3.

Now on to more important things, like sleep if I can get there before sunrise!
